Ghanaian Religious Leaders Stand Firm on Anti LGBTQ Laws

Religious leaders in Ghana have issued a stern warning, declaring their unwavering stance against any attempts by foreign entities to impose LGBTQ+ practices on the nation.

These leaders are resolute in their determination to oppose persistent efforts by certain groups to introduce such practices to the Ghanaian population.

US Ambassador’s Remarks Spark Concerns

The caution from religious leaders comes in response to recent statements made by Virginia Palmer, the United States Ambassador to Ghana, regarding the promotion of LGBTQ+ rights.

Ambassador Palmer expressed concerns that Ghana could face potential repercussions, including the potential loss of LGBTQ+ investors and American businesses, if the proposed anti-LGBTQ+ bill is not approached with care.

Proposed Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill: Aiming for Legal Restrictions

Currently under consideration in Parliament, the proposed Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill seeks to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities within the country.

Additionally, the bill aims to curb the promotion and advocacy of LGBTQ+ content while providing support and protection for children and individuals associated with LGBTQ+ matters.

Religious Leaders Voice Their Perspective

In separate interviews with the Ghanaian Times in Accra, prominent religious figures shared their perspectives on the matter.

The Anglican Bishop of Accra, Right Reverend Dr. Daniel Sylvanus Mensah Torto, emphasized the perceived threat to the country’s independence posed by the Ambassador’s remarks. He stressed the importance of engaging with the United States to address its stance on LGBTQ+ issues.

Preserving Cultural Values and National Identity

Rt Rev. Prosper Samuel Dzomeku, the Moderator of the Global Evangelical Church, highlighted the need for Ghana to clearly define its stance on LGBTQ+ matters. He emphasized the importance of promoting inclusivity and tolerance while ensuring alignment with the country’s cultural heritage and values.

Rt Rev. Dzomeku reaffirmed the commitment to faith, values, and national identity, underscoring their role in maintaining stability and strength.

In summary, Ghanaian religious leaders are steadfast in their dedication to safeguarding the nation’s cultural values and identity while engaging in a respectful dialogue concerning LGBTQ+ matters.
