Production of Tasty Tom Tomato Mix Halted By FDA For Safety Concerns

Production of Tasty Tom Tomato Mix Halted By FDA For Safety Concerns

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued an immediate suspension of the production of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix by Nutrifoods Ghana Limited, citing serious lapses in manufacturing quality and safety protocols.

Consumer complaints, especially reports of bloated cans and pouches of Tasty Tom, prompted the FDA inspections. The Investigators uncovered poor maintenance of critical machinery, weak monitoring systems, and broken sealing processes. These deficiencies may have led to contamination, visible mold, and product bloating, which poses a direct threat to public health.

This happens to be their second ban in 2025; the FDA had previously barred Nutrifoods from producing Tasty Tom in January, this same year, raising serious questions about compliance and regulatory follow‑through.

Highlighting how serious this may be, the FDA announced it has initiated an internal probe to examine whether oversight failures within its ranks allowed production to resume prematurely. The Authority emphasized that any internal breach of duty “will be swiftly dealt with to strengthen our regulatory framework.”

Meanwhile, it has issued strong consumer guidance that states that all canned Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix and designated batches of the 380g and 1.05kg pouches should be pulled from stores. We urge retailers, wholesalers, and consumers to follow the directive and refrain from using or selling the affected products.

In response, Nutrifoods announced a voluntary nationwide recall on August 1, 2025, targeting 210g and 400g canned packs, as well as specified pouch batches, including the 380g and 1.05kg variants. The company attributed the recall to FDA and National Security recommendations following concerns about bloated packaging.

Customers are instructed to bring affected products to the Nutrifoods Tema office or any authorised distributor across the country for a replacement. The company has provided contact details for consumer assistance. In its statement, Nutrifoods expressed regret and reaffirmed its commitment to food safety and product quality.
