List of Universities in Ghana Accredited by GTEC

Ghana boasts a vibrant higher education landscape with a diverse array of universities, each contributing to the nation’s academic growth. For the purpose of this list, we focus on accredited tertiary-level institutions that offer degrees.

Notably, some smaller private universities are affiliated with larger public institutions, often referred to as “university colleges.” The term “polytechnics” is also used to categorize certain institutions.

Diverse Educational Landscape: Beyond Universities

Ghana’s educational landscape extends beyond traditional universities. This includes local branches of foreign universities and institutions that provide classes for students who sit for exams at larger Ghanaian universities’ distance education centers. Accreditation of universities and colleges is overseen by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.

GTEC Accredited Universities in Ghana

  1. University of Ghana: Established in 1948, the University of Ghana, located in Legon, Accra, stands as a cornerstone of academic excellence in the country.
  2. Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology: Founded in 1952 in Kumasi, Ashanti, KNUST is renowned for its commitment to science and technology education.
  3. University of Cape Coast: Since 1961, UCC in Cape Coast, Central, has been a hub of knowledge dissemination and growth.
  4. University of Education, Winneba: UEW, founded in 1992 in Winneba, Central, focuses on teacher education and research.
  5. All Nations University: ANU, located in Koforidua, Eastern, has gained prominence for its comprehensive educational programs.
  6. University of Mines and Technology: UMaT, situated in Tarkwa, Western, specializes in mining and related fields.
  7. University of Professional Studies: Founded in 1965 in Accra, UPSA is known for its practical-oriented business education.
  8. University for Development Studies: UDS, established in 1992 in Tamale, Northern, is dedicated to advancing development-oriented education.
  9. Ashesi University: Ashesi, situated in Berekuso, Eastern Region, is celebrated for its innovative and interdisciplinary approach to education.
  10. Ensign Global College: Located in Kpong, Eastern, EGC offers specialized programs aligned with the needs of industries.
  11. University of Health and Allied Sciences: This University was established in 2012 to focus solely on training health professionals. It’s located in the Volta region of Ghana

Ghana is home to other diverse institutions, including:

  • Technical universities like Accra Technical University, Ho Technical University, and Kumasi Technical University.
  • Professional institutes such as the Ghana Institute of Journalism and the Ghana Institute of Languages.
  • Private universities like Valley View University and Central University.
  • Wisconsin International University College

  • Webster University Ghana Campus, affiliated with Webster University in St. Louis, USA.
