NTC Clarifies Pass Mark for Subject Based Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination
Introduction:
The management of the National Teaching Council (NTC) has provided clarity on the pass mark for the maiden Ghana teacher licensure examination (GTLE), emphasizing that it is set at 50%.
This contradicts the previously rumored 70% pass rate that had circulated widely on social media platforms.
Official Statement from NTC:
A spokesperson for the Ghana Teaching Council, Denis Osei-Owusu, confirmed that the proposed 70% pass rate, suggested by a Council committee member, is still pending approval from NTC management.
This clarification comes as a significant number of candidates gear up to take the maiden subject-based teacher licensure examination across 52 examination centers.
Osei-Owusu provided additional details about the candidates, revealing that 14,438 of them are trainees from the 46 public Colleges of Education, while the remaining 9,448 candidates are from various universities.
The examination centers vary in candidate numbers, with the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) having the highest at 1,501 candidates, and the Tumu College of Education center having the fewest, with 58 candidates.
Assurance of Specialized Assessment:
He assured that the Ghana teacher licensure examination would assess candidates based on their areas of specialization, alleviating any concerns about the examination’s fairness.
Background on Subject-Based GTLE:
The subject-based GTLE, introduced in September 2018, marks the 11th edition of the national examination granting professional teaching licenses to education graduates.
This new approach focuses on subject-specific assessments, a departure from the previous generalized examination format.
Potential Pass Mark Adjustment:
The potential adjustment of the pass mark from 50% to 70% is currently pending approval. This proposal comes in light of concerns raised by Dr. David Prah, the Deputy Director for TVET Service.
Dr. Prah expressed reservations about the 50% pass mark, suggesting that it leaves teachers with a 50% deficit when entering the classroom, emphasizing the need for NTC to revisit the licensure examination’s pass mark.
In summary, the NTC management has clarified that the pass mark for the subject-based Ghana teacher licensure examination is 50%, contrary to the 70% figure circulating on social media. This announcement comes as candidates from various institutions prepare to undertake this significant examination.
