A substantial majority of these private institutions have obtained accreditation from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), which grants them the authority to offer a diverse range of academic programs.
Diverging from public universities, which are under the exclusive purview of the central government, private universities are typically owned by individuals, institutions, faith-based organizations, or even religious entities such as churches.
As of the current academic year, the Commission for Tertiary Education has conferred accreditation upon over 100 private tertiary institutions, allowing them to provide a spectrum of HND and degree programs.
