This group of philanthropists and tourism enthusiasts is flipping the script, embarking on a reverse journey from Africa to Europe. Buckle up as we take you on their exciting expedition, where they traverse through diverse African countries, encounter remarkable experiences, and plan to make a positive impact on rural primary schools back home.
Setting the Wheels in Motion
The journey commenced on July 23, 2023, as the intrepid travelers set off from Accra and made their way through captivating destinations like Aburi, Nsawam, Kumasi, Sunyani, and Dormaa.
Crossing into Cote d’Ivoire, they embarked on an awe-inspiring traverse through Mali, Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco before reaching the European continent via a ferry to Spain.
As of Friday, August 4, 2023, they were on the outskirts of Monaco, eagerly anticipating their entry into France and the final leg of their expedition to London, expected to conclude by Sunday, August 6, or Monday, August 7.
The Diverse Fleet and Fuel Consumption
Kwabena Peprah and his team set out on this grand journey as a group of 12 individuals, utilizing various vehicles, including a Mercedez G-Wagon, Toyota Landcruiser, Toyota Tundra, Lexus, and a Ford. Each day, the fleet consumes approximately 250 liters of fuel, a testament to the colossal distances they cover daily.
Navigating Borders with the Ghana Card
The Ghana Card, also known as the ECOWAS card, played a crucial role in facilitating their passage through West African countries until Mauritania.
Upon reaching Mauritania, they encountered a minor hitch, requiring them to obtain a visa on arrival for 60 Euros. Unfortunately, they had to pay double due to alleged extortion by security officers, shelling out 120 Euros.
The team proceeded smoothly from Mauritania to Morocco, where they acquired a visa on arrival for $10, and finally entered Europe via Spain with a Schengen visa. Their ultimate destination: London, where they aimed to fulfill their noble cause.
Purpose Beyond the Journey
For Kwabena Peprah and his passionate crew, this epic road trip was not solely about the thrill of exploration. They had a greater purpose—to raise funds for rural primary schools.
In partnership with EduSpots, a philanthropy organization dedicated to creating educational hotspots for schools in underprivileged areas, they sought to make a meaningful impact on their community.
Inspiration and Motivation
The driving force behind this audacious expedition stemmed from the inspiration garnered from tales of people journeying from Europe to Ghana and other African nations by road.
Curiosity and a thirst for adventure compelled Kwabena Peprah and his team to embark on this unparalleled odyssey. Their desire to explore different nations while supporting a charitable cause provided the perfect blend of adventure and altruism.
Dreams Beyond London
With the European leg in progress and London soon to welcome them, Kwabena Peprah and Wanderlust Ghana are already setting their sights on their next ambitious endeavor. In 2024, they aim to drive from Accra all the way to Cape Town, South Africa—a journey that promises even more incredible experiences and memorable encounters.
The Mauritanian Ordeal and Memorable Moments
While the road trip presented countless unforgettable moments, there were some challenges too. Mauritania left a lasting impression with an unfortunate seven-hour delay due to an encounter with police officers.
These officers cited a traffic rule infraction and threatened to impound their vehicles for two days, demanding a fine for tinted windows. Despite such challenges, Kwabena Peprah’s two favorite countries along the route were Senegal and Morocco.
These nations impressed the team with their beauty, cleanliness, friendly people, and excellent infrastructure. A heartwarming incident with a Moroccan policeman who recognized their Ghanaian vehicle registration plates and escorted them with sirens epitomized the warmth of their cross-continental journey.
