WAEC to Cancel Registration: The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued a stern warning, stating that it will invalidate the registration of ineligible candidates for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
This decision comes in response to reports of parents transferring their children from private schools in Basic Stage Six (JHS 1, 2, and 3) to public schools solely for the purpose of registering for the BECE.
WAEC has emphasized that such actions are in direct violation of regulations set forth by both the Ghana Education Service and WAEC.
Investigation and Annulment
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Mr. John K. Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, revealed that the Council is currently investigating several cases of this nature, and the registrations of those candidates involved will be nullified.
He urged parents not to subject their children to such distressing experiences.
BECE Schedule and Registration Statistics
The BECE for schools and private candidates is scheduled to take place from Monday, August 7 to Friday, August 11, 2023, throughout the country.
An impressive total of 600,714 candidates have registered for the school examination, comprising 300,323 males and 300,391 females from 18,993 participating schools. Notably, this year’s figure represents an 8.8 percent increase compared to the entry figure of 552,276 in 2022.
Rise in BECE Private Candidates
Additionally, the BECE for private candidates has seen a rise in numbers, with 1,743 candidates registering this year, consisting of 889 males and 854 females. This figure represents a 5.4 percent increase from the 2022 entry figure of 1,132 candidates.
Enrollment Surge Contributing to Candidate Increase
The significant increase in candidate numbers can be attributed to the surge in enrollment across various schools in the country, according to Mr. Kapi. To accommodate the BECE, there will be 2,137 examination centers set up across the country for school candidates, while 15 centers, mainly located in regional capitals, will be designated for private candidates.
