The persistent public outcry over salary increments for legislators has caught the attention of the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, who expressed his concerns regarding the matter.
The Speaker believes that the extensive responsibilities carried by Members of Parliament (MPs) within their constituencies warrant appropriate remuneration.
Addressing the issue during a public forum held in Takoradi, located in the Western Region, Speaker Bagbin emphasized that MPs shoulder significant responsibilities in their constituencies. He stressed the importance of adequately compensating these elected officials for their dedication and service.
The Speaker acknowledged the complex dynamics surrounding the discussion of legislators’ salary increases. He observed a contradiction where constituents, while frequently seeking financial assistance from their elected representatives, often react negatively to the idea of salary increments for these officials.
“Whatever is given to the one you struggled to elect, you are opposed to it. Even though every day you knock at his door to request money to pay school fees and hospital bills, donate to churches, festivals, and funerals, you hate to hear that his salary is being increased, there must be a problem,” Speaker Bagbin remarked.
Over the years, Members of Parliament have consistently advocated for adjustments to their salaries. They have emphasized that their salaries have not been periodically reviewed, as is the case for public sector workers.
The dialogue surrounding legislators’ compensation reflects a nuanced interplay between the financial needs of constituents and the demands of public service. As the discussions continue, it remains to be seen how these considerations will influence decisions regarding the remuneration of MPs in the future.
