Ministry of Education Announces SHS Selection Date

SHS Selection Date: After ending sensitization on the selection of schools on September 15, 2023, the Ministry of Education (MoE) says students who sat for this year’s BECE will begin their Senior High Schools selection from Monday, September 18, 2023.

Efforts for a Smooth Process

An official of the Ministry in an interview with Timesghana said his outfit, in collaboration with the Free Senior High School Secretariat and the Ghana Education Service, has put in place measures to ensure the nationwide process is smooth and successful.

“We urge parents/guardians of the students who participated in the 2023 BECE to from Monday, September 18, 2023, take a keen interest in their ward’s second cycle school selection for onward computer placement,” the MoE official said.

Date Change Explained

The new 2023 Senior High Schools selection date comes after the Ghana Education Service (GES) earlier communicated to start the school selection process on August 23, 2023, but later rescheduled over reasons not made public.

A total of 600,714 candidates, comprising 300,323 males and 300,391 females from 18,993 Junior High Schools (JHSs) sat for the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) which ended on Friday, August 11, 2023.

Notable Increase in Participation

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) amid low entries in registration of BECE for Private Candidates this academic year conducted both the 2023 BECE for School and BECE for Private Candidates simultaneously.

The number of candidates that registered for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School according to the non-profit-making organization (WAEC) is 8.8% higher than the 2022 entry figure of 552,276.

Private Candidates’ Uptick

With regard to the 2023 BECE for Private Candidates, a total entry figure of 1,743 candidates was recorded. This is made up of 889 males and 854 females. This year’s figure is 5.4% higher than the entry figure of 1,132 for 2022.

The 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School Candidates was held at 2,137 examination centers across the country, while 15 centers mainly in the regional capitals were used for the BECE for Private candidates.
